Long before there was a Conseco Fieldhouse or Market Square Arena, there was the Fairgrounds Coliseum. The building has stood on the Indiana State Fairgrounds since 1938. The first tenant was the old Indianapolis Capitals of the AHL. They used the building from 1939 thru 1952. The Indianapolis Checkers of the IHL followed from 1979 till 1987. Then came the Indianapolis Ice of both the CHL and USHL from 2003 till the building closed in 2012. The Indy Fuel of the ECHL will call the Coliseum home starting in 2014. But the buildings biggest draw was the Indiana Pacers of the old ABA. They played from 1967 thru the 1974 season winning 3 ABA titles in the process. The Pacers moved on to the brand new Market Square Arena for the start of the 1974 ABA season.

Tragedy struck on October 31, 1963 during a Holiday on Ice show. A propane tank leak at a concession stand turned into a massive explosion which killed 74 people. The building was repaired and reopened after the blast. The Coliseum was showing its age, wooden seats, cramped concourses and was closed in 2012. A major overhaul of the building took place and the "New" Fairgrounds Coliseum made its debut on April 23, 2014.
