Richmond Arena (demolished) - Richmond, Virginia
Ballparks, Arenas and Stadiums > Richmond Arena (demolished) - Richmond, Virginia
Music - Lucky town by Bruce Springsteen

Photographed in 1991, 1997 and 2005 using film.

Richmond Arena - Opened in 1908, closed in 1987 and torn down in 1997.

The two main tenants for the dank arena were the NCAA Richmond Spiders, who played here from 1954 thru 1971, and the Virginia Squires of the old ABA who played here from 1970 - 1971.

The biggest draw to the arena were concerts and pro wrestling. One of the last bands to play here was Rush in 1975.

The Richmond Arena. Dump is a nice word in the few times I saw the building. I first saw it in 1991, and t he building had been closed / abandoned, for years. It was a favorite for the pro wrestling circuit in the 50's and 60's. It also held the Southern conference men's basketball championships from 1955 till 1963. The University of Richmond played home games in the old barn. It never had a seating capacity above 6,000. The last big hurrah for the building was as a part time home for the vagabond Virginia Squires of the old ABA. The building was finally demolished in 1997. The Sports Backers soccer stadium sits on the site now.

Location - Hermitage Road Richmond, Virginia Just to the southeast of Parker FIeld / the Diamond. A pop fly away.
