Manzanar - Located just to the east of the Sierra Nevada's in he high desert of eastern California's Owens Valley. (almost directly east of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks). During WWII, Manzanar was an internment camp for Japanese Americans, due to the hysteria of the war in the Pacific. From 1942 to 1945 over 110,000 Japanese Americans lived and died at Manzanar. Not much is left, just a lot of concrete slabs and the Gym. Houses have been re constructed to show what conditions were like. BRUTAL cold snow winters and hot hot summers. Manzanar and the other internment camps were a dark spot in America's history.
Location - Manzanar, California no longer exists. Manzanar NHS is located about 10 miles north of Lone Pine, California and 8 miles south of Independence, California on US 395. It is also about 230 miles northeast of Los Angeles, California.
