Astrodome - Opened in 1965, closed in 2005 and still standing. Originally known as the Harris County Domed Stadium in 1965. Known as the Houston Astrodome 1965 - 2000, Reliant Astrodome 2000- present. The Astrodome is in a bad state of disrepair. Mold and mildew are everywhere. Seats are worn and ripped. The building can't be occupied in its current state. No decision has been made yet on the fate of the Astrodome. The major tenants were the Houston Astros 1965 - 1999, Houston Oilers 1968 - 1996, Houston Cougars NCAA 1965 - 1997, Houston Gamblers USFL 1984 - 1985, Houston Texans WFL 1974. Once the Astros left and Reliant Stadium was built next to the Astrodome, the events literally dried up, leaving the Dome a virtual ghost. The last so called event for the Astrodome was in 2005. The Astrodome was used as a shelter for Hurricane Katrina refugees from New Orleans. Another note on the Astros.....Their first home, Colt Stadium, was just north of where the Astrodome stands now. The Colt Stadium site is now a parking lot for Reliant Stadium.

The Astrodome. Who knows what is in its future, but for Houstonians, the Dome will always have a special place in their hearts. 8/94
