Something different from stadiums and arenas....... an implosion of a hotel.

I was lucky enough to be in Las Vegas on October 27th 1993. That was the night the old Dunes hotel was to be imploded. I was across the street in the parking lot of Bally's hotel and casino. The Dunes had been closed since January 1993. The hotel had been gutted and set for demolition. I actually saw Sam Kinison at the Dunes in 1991. I remember one of his jokes as "the Dunes - the K-Mart of Las Vegas Hotels". The last decade of its life, the Dunes was a dump.

In typical Las Vegas style, they decided to make an event out of the implosion. At 10 pm, the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino had one of their pirate ships "fire" a volley at the old Dunes. The first thing to go was the sign as a fireball exploded. The next was the tower, as fireworks and flames engulfed the old hotel. It was a cool evening, but the heat from the implosion was felt across the street. It was really cool to watch this firsthand. I am so lucky to have been in Las Vegas that October night.

A few years later, the Bellagio resort hotel and casino was built on the site of the old Dunes.
