Location - 300 N. Winning St. Portland, Oregon.
Original home for the Portland TrailBlazers of the NBA.
Built in 1960, Veterans Memorial Coliseum has seen it all in Portland. The first BIG tenant showed up in 1970 as the NBA expanded to the Rose City. The Portland TrailBlazers were born. The arena is very compact for events, seating 12,888 for basketball and 13,000 for hockey. Attendance was around 10,000 per game for the Blazers in the first few seasons. They played their first home game on October 16, 1970. They beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 115 to 112, but finished the season 29 and 50. Their fortunes turned around in 1974 when they drafted the big Red Head out of UCLA, Bill Walton. He led them to the promised land and on June 5, 1977 they beat the Philadelphia 76ers 109 - 107 to capture the NBA worlds championship. Blazermania was in full swing. The Blazers were in need of a new facility. Work was begun right next door in 1993 on the new Rose Garden arena. The Blazers played their final home game at the old Coliseum on May 2nd, 1995. A playoff loss to the Phoenix Suns 117-109. The old arena now only had one main tenant. The Portland WinterHawks of the WHL. Talk was going on about demolishing the old arena and building a new baseball stadium for the AAA Portland Beavers. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in September of 2009. This is due to the architectural design of the building and the way the sides are made of glass. The Portland WinterHawks and the city of Portland are planning on pumping 30 million in renovations to the building. Looks like the onetime home of the Blazers will be in Rip City for a long time to come.
