Ballparks, Arenas and Stadiums > The Pyramid (closed) - Memphis, Tennessee
Music - Time is tight by Booker T and the MG's

Photographed in October of 2016 using digital.

Opened in 1991 and closed in 2004. The arena was renovated and reopened in 2015 as a Bass Pro Shop.

Tenants included the Memphis Tigers from 1991 - 2004. The Memphis Pharos of the AFL, from 1995 - 1996 and the Memphis Grizzlies from 2001 - 2004.

The arena is now known as the Memphis Pyramid. Former names include the Great American Pyramid, Pyramid Arena and the Pyramid.

The Pyramid had problems from the get go. The first night the building had an event, the arena floor flooded because of inadequate drainage pumps.

The last straw for the arena was when the Vancouver Grizzlies of the NBA moved there in 2001. The arena was not up to NBA standards and renovation was cost prohibitive. The Pyramid had horrible acoustics for concerts, and very poor lighting. It was one of the darker buildings in sports. So the city of Memphis ponied up and built the FedEx Forum in downtown. The Grizzlies left after the 2004 season and the arena went dark.

The last reported event at the Pyramid was on February 3, 2007 when Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band played one last show here. After that, the building went dark. It took 8 years to breathe new life into the building.

Location 1 Auction Ave. Memphis, Tennessee. Now the address is 1 Bass Pro Dr. Memphis, Tennessee.
