Independence Stadium - (originally known as State Fair Stadium) Opened in 1925 and is still standing.
Location - 3301 Pershing Blvd., Shreveport, Louisiana. On the Louisiana State Fairgrounds.
Independence Stadium, located next to both Hirsch Coliseum and Fairgrounds Field, has hosted football since it was built in 1925. It has mostly been used for high schools and state championship games. It is also the site of the Independence Bowl, played ever December. The Stadium has had two pro teams, the short lived Shreveport Steamer of the WFL. They played there from 1974 thru 1975, folding halfway thru the 75 season. Canadian football came to Shreveport 20 years later as the Shreveport Pirates came to be. They lasted 2 years from 1995 thru 1995. In the late 90's the stadium was expanded to 59,000 and to 62,000 in 2008. After hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Independence Stadium was in the running as a temporary home for the New Orleans Saints. Unfortunately for Shreveport, they lost out to the Alamodome and San Antonio. The stadium is a part time home to Louisiana Tech football. Louisiana Tech is in nearby Ruston, Louisiana.
